Literacy Through Play... A "Little" More on Choice Time Workshop

Here is the primary resource that I am reading (A Quick Guide To Boosting English Acquisition in Choice Time by Alison Porcelli & Cheryl Tyler) to think about Choice Time Workshop.

In this book the authors explain the idea of a Choice Workshop in this way:

“The phrase— choice time workshopimplies not only that children are invited to play with blocks and construct art projects but also this time adheres to the structures of workshop teaching. Workshops—whether reading workshops, writing workshops, or choice time workshops—are designed to provide learners with long chunks of time so that they have the opportunity to plan, to construct, to revise, and to share work. Choice time workshops not only provide children with opportunities for extended independent work, but these workshops also provide children with explicit instruction from a teacher.”

  1. JUST found your blog and i LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I have taught kindergarten and am now in 1st. I adore "choice" time and HATE the fact that my kids don't have that time to learn from each other and socialize. Going to AMAZON right after I "follow" and post this to get the book. It MAY just be what i NEED to get me out of my funk this year...
    THANK YOU!!!

  2. Thanks Tracey! Let me know what you think after you read the book. Maybe we can bounce some ideas off of each other in terms of what this looks like in kindergarten, first, and second grades.

  3. Thank you for posting about this book - we have been having a book talk about Taberski's book on Comprehension from the ground up - and this is a perfect companion book it seems to bridge those missing links that I have been trying to tie together - I too am going to get this book right away and brush up for the new school year - I have kindergarten this year - numbers look different for this school year so I could end up with any where from k-2 depending on enrollment. Thanks again - invaluable

  4. Thanks for posting about this book! I'm teaching K this year after teaching 1st for the past three years and I've been struggling with the idea of choice time and how to make sure that it's purposeful. I think this will be a great book to read!
